undercurrentNews reports today that a Chinese company has signed a distribution deal with seafood distributor IS Seafood for their forward looking, carbon friendly plant-based meat.
More and more it looks like investing in salmon farming, whether open pen or land based, is a short sighted investment. In fact, land based RAS, with its inherently huge carbon footprint likes to claim being close to their market removes the heavy carbon footprint of flying fish via airplane. However, RAS’s heavy carbon footprint from all the cement and steel required to build their facilities and the incredible amount of electricity it takes to constantly circulate huge amounts of water has people and regulators waking up to the reality that RAS is not a viable solution at a time when we have to decarbonize electricity production.
Z-Rou Meat, founded by Biggi Stefansson of IS Seafood is quoted saying: “We all care about the future. We all care about our health. We care about our children. We feel it’s important to reduce meat consumption based on environmental factors”
While salmon farmers are desperately seeking a feed source to produce their high end product the rest of us are looking for an environmentally conscious source of protein. As the UN IPCC report recommends, if we want to protect the planet from climate change we must eat less meat.
And of course, salmon farms require huge amounts of feed and that feed has a huge carbon footprint, so it seems prudent to skip the middleman — “middlefish”? — and people, especially the younger generation, are already starting to eat more plant based food and reduce or eliminate meat.
