salmonbusiness is reporting that the Burin Peninsula Chamber of Commerce in Newfoundland believes that lumpfish are an “environmentally friendly solution to an important issue” and should be able to “skip environmental assessment.
This proposed 3 million lumpfish a year hatchery is a common type of facility with lots of prior art which limits risk and perhaps justifies a call for streamlined environmental assessment.
However what has changed is the environment. Scientists worldwide have declared a climate emergency and Greenhouse Gases are the focus of most mitigation and potential solutions.
One look at this proposed Marbase hatchery shows it will be the source of a significant amount of Greenhouse Gases, both to build and to operate.
