It is hard not to notice the RAS industry is experiencing tremendous growth exhibiting the same crazy market exuberence as the Internet Bubble of the late 90’s however IntraFish is reporting today that Nekkar has been awarded a $1.1 million grant to persue it’s innovative closed-cage technology in partnership with a “renowned fish farmer”.
Proponents of RAS technology offen claim their advantage to Open Net Pen fish farming is solving the problems of sea lice and escapees and the ability to be closer to market. Their dear attachment to the “sustainablity” term seems chosen to hide the inherient heavy carbon footprint these facilities have leaving their only remaining advantage is they can be close to market.
The Nekkar design aims to be cheaper to build, have a much lower carbon footprint than RAS and will increase production and efficiency with improved fish welfare and will eliminate the lice and waste problems of open net farming.
Nekkar’s design is ocean based and over 70% of the planet is ocean so might blow RAS’s last remaining advantage “out of the water”.
What’s not to like other than the unethical treatment of a magnificent being like an Atlantic Salmon?
