RAS.Exposed explores the limits of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems. RAS technology is seen by many as the future of the fish farming industry and the worldwide aquaculture industry is experiencing a very rapid build out of RAS operations making it difficult for any level of government to establish appropriate regulations effectively allowing moneyed interests to decide the value of our health, our local environments and our planet in a time of certain global climate chaos.

Recirculating Aquaculture Systems – Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (RAS-CAFO) as defined here refers to an Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) using RAS technology in order to produce more than 1000 tons of fish per year, with a biomass density greater than 30kg/m^3 and which discharges wastewater. Most RAS-CAFOs are Land Based RAS (LB-RAS).

This website is a collaborative Information Portal to help citizens stay informed and connected in order to be engaged in their local regulatory and legislative processes regarding this new technology which is attracting investment money world wide making it difficult for local communities to meaningfully participate in this complex, multidimensional issue. Local communities have a right and responsiblity to protect their health, local environment and our planet. All content is Free Cultural Work, ShareAlike 4.0; please share!

Key Concerns

Risky Technology

The Land Based RAS-CAFO industry is in its infancy with little track record or predictable success. There is no certainty to the feed supply as that industry is also new and existing feed supplies are stretched.  The challenge of energy use in the time of climate change is also a huge question!

Carbon Footprint

Emphasis is placed on carbon footprint here at RAS.expose as the National Climate Accessment and IPCC Paris reports both make it clear almost nothing else matters more to a sustainable future now as does decarbonizing our way of life.

Local Environmental Impact

A local environmental impact might be an input impact such as drawing millions of gallons a day of fresh water from an aquifer or could be an output impact dumping effluent into a bay.

Nutritional Quality

Nutritional quality is used here to encompass all aspects of fish as food. This includes flavor and visual aestics.

Animal Welfare

Fish feel pain and are complex living beings. The animal densities needed for RAS-CAFOs to be viable are typically not good for the animal.
